There has been a strong rise in the number of people opting for self-employment in the UK labour market, according to the latest data.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show an increase from 3.8 million self-employed workers in 2008 to 4.6 million in 2015.
The ONS report shows generally the majority are content with their self-employed status, with few suggesting they are looking for other methods of employment.
Economic policy adviser at the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE) Lorence Nye explained it is estimated that freelancers in the UK now contribute around £109 billion to the country’s economy.
He added: “The self-employed now make up 15 per cent of the labour market compared to 13 per cent in 2008, and the vast majority of these workers made a positive choice to become their own boss.
“The research also shows that the self-employed are generally happy with their situation. Their reasoning is clear; being your own boss gives you the flexibility to achieve a better work-life balance, take on the work you want, and ultimately improve your general wellbeing.”
